The 2023 #LikeAGirl mentor program for girls in kindergarten to 8th grade will kick off with a free event on Tuesday, Oct. 3 from 6-7 p.m. at Alliance High School.
The program aims to connect younger Aviators to high school girl mentors who are leaders in sports, clubs and academics at AHS with the goal of empowering them to see their full potential and build life skills.
Meetings will be held at Alliance High School and will feature women speakers as well as activities for the students to participate in that will help them to build confidence and life skills.
Monthly meetings will be themed and take place in the gymnasium at AHS.
“We want to give our youth a chance to see our high school girls thriving in these areas so they can picture themselves there one day, too,” said Stephanie McKnight, founder of the program.
She started the program this year after the successful #LikeAGirl photo and social media campaign four years ago. Student athletes at the high school took photos with younger girls to inspire them to see themselves as successful athletes as well.
McKnight hopes to take the spirit of the campaign and turn it into a program that fosters not only relationships for the high school mentors and middle school attendees, but also builds skills for all of them in specific categories such as sportsmanship, body image, self care, stress management, team work and even career choices.
The October meeting will feature guest speaker Allison Morrison, school counselor at Alliance High School, who will discuss the importance of trying new things. Participants will have the opportunity to see other girls who are involved in high school clubs and organizations even beyond athletics.
